Overview

Beginning with Gusen Yamanouchi, the foundation of Osaka’s Western-style painting world was formed by Sangoro Matsubara and Rinsaku Akamatsu, after which Narashige Koide and others created a new era of modernism, bringing more vibrancy to the art world. We look back on the trajectory of the Western-style painters who added color to modern Osaka, following them through the postwar period.
